Inquiry says Ofsted needs major reform and is 'not fit for purpose'

An inquiry into Ofsted has deemed it "not fit for purpose" and requires "transformational change". The Beyond Ofsted inquiry also said it found the education inspectorate for England to have a "detrimental impact on schools which some perceive as toxic".

The inquiry, chaired by former schools minister Lord Jim Knight and Sponsored by the National Education Union (NEU), recommended that the school inspection system undergo a complete overhaul.

Recommendations from the inquiry included self-evaluation from schools alongside work with an external school improvement partner that would aid the school in the long-term.

In this case, they would validate and support the school to help them deliver an action plan while parents are provided with "readable and useful information" instead of a single-word verdict.
