The government has survived a vote on its plans to cut the Winter Fuel Payment despite some Labour MPs refusing to back the move.

Millions of pensioners are set to miss out on the previously universal benefit which will only be paid to people claiming Pension Credit, or pensioners claiming other means-tested benefits, this year.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced the decision in July, blaming the the last Conservative government for leaving a £22bn black hole in the public finances - but the policy has been described as 'cruel'.

MPs voted on a motion aiming to block the winter fuel cuts on Tuesday (September 10). In total, 228 MPs voted for the motion - including one Labour MP in West Yorkshire - but 348 MPs voted against it, while as many as 52 Labour MPs did not vote at all.
