A petrol bomber who got himself caught after police discovered that he stored his target’s address in his car’s sat nav system has been jailed.

Colin McGhee, 28, was sentenced to five years and 10 months for the attack in Greenock, Inverclyde, on September 28 2020. The High Court in Glasgow had earlier heard how McGhee carried out the attack at Craig McFarlane’s property in the town. The court heard how McFarlane was himself heavily involved at that time in a series of fire bomb attacks against rivals in the town.It later saw the 27-year-old and five associates jailed for a total of 64 years for a murder plot.Judge Lord Scott heard how McGhee - a plant machinery firm boss - targeted McFarlane after he and others had taken an unwanted "interest" in his business.McGhee pleaded guilty at the High Court in Glasgow to wilfully setting fire to the flat, endangering the lives of McFarlane and others living at the block.

Lord Scott deferred sentence on McGhee until Thursday for the court to obtain a report on McGhee’s background. On Thursday, the case called again at the High Court in Edinburgh.

On Thursday Defence advocate Victoria Young told Lord Scott had McGhee had experienced “adverse” childhood events which had affected his development.
