Street lights in Tameside are to be dimmed ‘imperceptibly’ to save cash – but chiefs say residents won’t notice the difference.
Tameside council currently spends more than £1.5m a year on electricity costs for street lighting operating from dusk till dawn, with a further £420k going on repairs and maintenance.
The authority is also trying to decrease its energy consumption to achieve its commitment to ‘Net Zero’ by 2038. As part of proposals to cut costs and also become a more environmentally-friendly borough, the executive cabinet has agreed measures to reduce the brightness of its street lights on its main roads.
Other options such as switching street lights off entirely at certain periods, such as from midnight to 5am, were also considered.
