Members of Scotland’s most famous country and western club are set for a high-noon showdown over the use of the controversial Confederate flag.
The Daily Record has told of a bitter split at the Grand Ole Opry, in Glasgow, which came after its elected committee banned the display of flags and any ceremony involving them.
The action came after guests were stunned at the flag’s ongoing use, given it was recently banned in several US states due to its increasing association with racist groups. The furious split in the membership led to the calling of an Emergency General Meeting tonight – where a secret ballot will determine if the flag will be brought back to the core of the club’s activities.A club source said: “It’s effectively high noon at 7pm, when the EGM kicks off.
I don’t think many members of the anti-flag lobby are looking forward to this, as it may be a pretty horrible experience.“The club constitution states that any item that causes offence can be taken out of use and that is what happened with the flag.
