The long-running selection process to designate a new national park in Scotland has moved to the next stage – with Galloway a strong contender.
Nominations have officially opened with communities and campaign groups across the country invited to explain to Scottish Ministers why their bid should be the winner.
To be in with a chance of success, bids must meet key criteria including outstanding national importance due to natural or culture heritage, a distinctive character and coherent identity, how national park status would meet the specific needs of the area and evidence of strong local support.
The deadline for submissions is February 29 next year. The successful bid – or possibly bids – will be unveiled next summer and the country’s third national park is expected to be up and running in 2026.
