A footballer who formed part of a flare-hurling mob of supporters after the Scottish Cup final has been ordered to carry out 150 hours unpaid work.

St Johnstone fan Aiden Edwards escaped a football banning order this week despite it being his second football-related conviction for disorder.Edwards, a striker for semi-pro Midlands League team Letham JFC, was found guilty of being part of an unruly mob who threw pyrotechnics and charged at police. The 23-year-old footballer was found guilty of being involved with the mob outside McDiarmid Park as St Johnstone's players returned after winning the Scottish Cup in May 2021.He was among a throng of between 50 and 60 supporters who were involved in the incident in the wake of the Perth team's historic double cup win that year.Edwards denied any wrongdoing and insisted he was only at McDiarmid Park to welcome his team back from Hampden, but he was found guilty after a two-day trial.Solicitor David Holmes, defending, said: "He plays football for a junior team.

He has been in the local press for this conviction, and also featured on the sports pages."He has a serious interest in football and is not interested in football-related disorder.

He has not been to that many matches because he plays at the same time."There is a conviction from a St Johnstone v Hamilton match six years ago, but he has no other record.
