An investigation is expected to be launched after a blaze ripped through a derelict mill building, sending huge quantities of smoke billowing out into the surrounding neighbourhood.
Dozens of firefighters were called to tackle the fire at Empress Mill in Old Trafford early on Friday morning. At its height, 10 crews of firefighters were at the scene, with images showing them dousing the flames with water on aerial platforms using specialist equipment.
Residents living in the area were told to stay indoors and keep doors and windows closed as choking smoke filled the air. Greater Manchester Police were at the scene off Chester Road together with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and it's understood an investigation to determine a cause is due to be launched.
Residents reported issues with 'squatters' inside the building, a former flat complex, and council bosses in Trafford said they were 'aware of previous issues with unauthorised people accessing the site'.
