Efforts to clear wards of legionella at the Royal Alexandra Hospital are ongoing, health bosses confirmed yesterday.NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) has said remedial works to the water system on wards 36 and 37 of the Paisley hospital are continuing. However, they were unable to state when the affected 35 beds will reopen to patients.

The two wards were closed on July 12 – 14 days after water testing revealed the potentially deadly legionella bacteria was present in six water outlets.Water samples were taken for testing on June 28 after concerns were raised about the temperature of the water within the wards which are in a separate building to the main hospital.

NHSGGC said patients were not at risk.It later confirmed that 18 patients housed in the psychiatry ward for older patients (ward 37) have been rehomed in a unit at Stobhill Hospital in North Glasgow. The remaining elderly care patients from ward 36 not fit for discharge were placed in other wards within the RAH.

None have been tested for legionnaire’s disease – a potentially fatal form of pneumonia.Renfrewshire Live, the new free app dedicated to bringing you around the clock breaking news, is now available to download.Powered by the Paisley Daily Express, Renfrewshire Live is your go-to source for news, features and sport with live coverage provided direct to the app, seven days a week. The dedicated team of experienced journalists, responsible for the publication of the award-winning Express, will focus on breaking news, day and night, across Renfrewshire’s towns and villages. There is also a dedicated St Mirren section that will follow every kick of the ball with the Buddies.
