The much-loved Emmerdale character Bob Hope has been a resident of the Dales for over 20 years and in that time has been a part of the biggest storylines to hit the show.

Even in the last week, Bob has been central to a storyline involving his discovery of Wendy and Liam's secretive affair and after a tense confrontation he is now fighting for his life in hospital.

But off screen, the actor Tony Audenshaw, who plays Bob, has been through ups and downs of his own in both his professional and personal life.

From experiencing homelessness and sleeping rough as a youngster to tragically losing his wife to cancer, here is what we know about the man behind one of the most-loved Emmerdale characters.
