Aberdeen legend John McMaster reckons Duk can still have a big part to play for the Dons going forward after ending his self-imposed exile - but only if he places his faith in new Pittodrie boss Jimmy Thelin. The Cape Verde international is back in training at Cormack Park after going AWOL all summer in a bid to force a move away from the club.

The 25-year-old - who is out of contract at the end of the season - has apologised for his conduct but the former Benfica B forward's return to the fold has generated a lukewarm response among Aberdeen fans. But McMaster - a key cog in the famous Dons side that lifted the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1984 - believes the striker can atone for his mistakes by playing his way into Thelin's plans.

The Swede has won all nine of his games in charge since arriving from Elfsborg and McMaster also reckons the 46-year-old's front-foot approach on the pitch will suit Duk to a tee.Speaking to The Press and Journal, he said: “Everybody makes mistakes but Duk will realise coming back is the best decision he could make.

Duk has stayed away a week then a week has become a month and then a second month and then a stand-off. If the manager can get Duk back to be being the player we saw in his first season – and from what we’ve seen so far I’ve got every reason to believe he can – then it will be great for everybody. “The club will have a player doing the business, the team will be stronger, and Duk himself can go on to earn the move he believes he is capable of.
