A dad who was found drunk and asleep at the wheel in the middle of a slip road has been banned from driving.Brian Shannon was so drunk he thought the section of the A77 he had stopped in was a layby - and had to be helped to the police car after being woken by officers.

But it was an active part of the road and police officers found him at the wheel with his lights out and engine off. The 60-year-old HGV driver appeared in the dock at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court on Monday.

He pleaded guilty to driving while having 96 microgrammes of alcohol in 100ml of blood - more than four times the 22mcg limit.

Prosecutor Jaide Podlesny said police were called after they saw Shannon's vehicle "swerving all over the road" and were "concerned by his erratic driving" at around 9.10pm on October 11, 2022.
