RENOWNED fashion journalist Hilary Alexander, who invented the term "supermodel", has died. The New Zealand native passed away on her 77th birthday on Sunday.

She was famous for her wealth of fashion knowledge - and worked as a writer and broadcaster for the likes of BBC, CNN and Hello Magazine.

Hilary - known as "Hils" to her celebrity friends such as Gianni Versace - started her career on Fleet Street. She began as a trainee reporter at 16 - but worked her way up to fashion editor of the Daily Telegraph by 1982.

The writer is said to have coined the term "supermodel".
