Dogs put down as seven 'filthy' puppies found trapped in metal pen and covered in faeces in squalid conditions

A dog and a puppy had to be put down to end their suffering after six other 'filthy' puppies were found trapped in a metal pen and covered in faeces and urine at a home in Heywood.

Police and RSPCA inspectors were called to the house after receiving reports about concerns for the welfare of animals. Once inside, they were horrified to find seven puppies in a pen that was covered in faeces and wee, with no food or water.

William Underwood, 28, of High Street, Heywood was arrested and appeared at Manchester Magistrates Court on August 10, where he pleaded guilty to four Animal Welfare Act offences, in a case brought by the RSPCA. The RSPCA attended Underwood’s home in October 2022 and discovered an adult bull breed dog named Cookie, and seven puppies that were just weeks old, inside a metal pen.

RSPCA inspector King said in his witness statement: “In the kitchen there was no food or water, just two empty bowls, there was a thin sheet on the floor but no bed or comfortable resting area.
