An urgent evacuation warning has been issued at a popular tourist spot in the Canary Islands.A wildfire has broken out on the Spanish island of La Palma as the region battles a 45C heatwave.Forestry close to residential properties has been ravaged by the flames - and emergency services have evacuated the area while they deal with the problem, reports the Mirror.Around 346 acres of land have been destroyed and Fernando Clavijo, president of the Canary Islands, said he believes 11 houses have already been destroyed.Nearby islands, including Gomera and Tenerife, have been asked to send help.President Clavijo said: "The number of people who need to be evacuated could reach 1,000.

It depends on whether we can bring these strong winds under control."Much of Europe is currently battling a deadly heatwave which has already claimed lives.Dangerous temperatures are expected across southern Europe in the next few days.The Met Office has warned of "health impacts and the potential for wildfires".Grahame Madge, spokesman for the service, said: "The heatwave conditions which are affecting parts of southwest Europe and northwest Africa are expected to extend eastward eventually reaching the Middle East later in the week."Communities in the affected regions should expect health impacts and the potential for wildfires."
