The UK and Scottish Governments have been urged to stop picking fights on the 25th anniversary of the first Holyrood election.
Labour said Scotland needs "to reset devolution so that our governments work together" and "the SNP and Tories would rather pick fights than deliver for Scotland".
The party's deputy leader Jackie Baillie called for Holyrood reforms "to deliver transparent government for the people of Scotland and to ensure Scots can hold their politicians to account."The Lib Dems also said the Scottish Parliament must "become more accountable, transparent, and effective in addressing the needs of the Scottish people." Likely next SNP first minister John Swinney complained last week about the “hostile outlook from the UK Government towards devolution”.
He also raised fears Holyrood’s powers could be “eroded” – calling on the next UK government to work to “re-establish the purpose of devolution”.Today marks exactly a quarter of a century after Scots first went to the polls to elect their MSPs.Swinney - who was among that first group of MSPs - become either the leading or the only candidate to be the new SNP leader and is expected to be Scotland’s seventh first minister.Baillie was also elected in the 1999 Scottish Parliament election.She said: “After 25 years, the Scottish parliament has put itself at the heart of Scottish society.“But the fact is that it is still a young institution and it’s best days lie ahead of it.“Right now, we need to reform Holyrood to deliver transparent government for the people of Scotland and to ensure Scots can hold their politicians to account.“We also need to reset devolution so that our governments work together - right now the SNP and Tories would rather pick fights than deliver
