A large bully-type dog that was shot dead by police after mauling two men had been rescued just 'two weeks ago'.The horror attack in Hamilton on Tuesday night left one victim with serious lower limb injuries.Armed officers descended onto the Tinto View area of the South Lanarkshire town after receiving reports of the attack by an out-of-control dog at around 5pm.

Paramedics from the Scottish Ambulance Service also attended and one man was found seriously injured. He was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment, where his current condition is unknown.

A second man - who was mauled by the same dog on Loudonhill Avenue, shortly before the incident on Tinto View - was taken to Hairmyres Hospital for treatment for minor injuries. It has since emerged that the animal - understood to be a grey large Bully-type breed - had only recently been adopted.Zeeshan Rashid - owner of the local Day Today shop - claimed the dog had been brought into the area just a fortnight ago.He told The Record: "The dog would come in to our shop most days and always seemed very well behaved. "He would jump up on the counter to get his dog treat and had a little innocent face. "He had been rescued a few weeks ago after he was beaten and abandoned."And he added: "You could tell he hasn't been treated well in the past as he was covered in scars.

It's tragic what has happened. "I think it could have been handled better. Surely the police could have caught him and handed him to the SSPCA."Police Scotland confirmed the dog was shot dead by specialist armed officers after it attempted to attack one of them.
