New research has found a link between two popular foods and a deadly disease. Scientists have warned that eating too much red meat and sugar could raise your chances of developing bowel cancer. This cancer is one of the most common forms of the disease in the UK, with more than 44,000 cases diagnosed every year.

It also causes the second highest number of cancer deaths annually. In recent years it has sparked even more concern among medical circles as the number of young people diagnosed with the disease has risen.

The number of adults aged 25 to 49 being diagnosed with bowel cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, increased by 22 percent between the early 1990s and 2018 in the UK.

It has previously been hypothesised that diet could be to blame. These most recent findings support the idea that what we eat is a major contributing factor to bowel cancer risk. The research, which was presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), also discovered that individuals below the age of 50, who were diagnosed with bowel cancer, had reduced levels of citrate.
