Wincing in pain, Helena Abrahams reached for her favourite piece of jewellery and gently placed it inside a box. Her parents had gifted her the diamond necklace for her birthday and she didn’t want to part with it.

She claims no medical professional would help her and she spent the next three years housebound without a single visitor or phone call. “I had no future,” she told the Manchester Evening News. “I couldn’t imagine spending the rest of my life trapped indoors. “I didn’t have a penny to my name and sold all my clothes and jewellery on eBay to survive and make sure my cats got food.” Helena, who lives in Bury, says she attempted to take legal action following her surgery but lost the case.
