The Ryan Murphy series, itself a spinoff of his popular “American Horror Story” franchise, “re-examines a prominent event involving a sports figure.” Season 1 of the show “will follow the story of Aaron Hernandez, the former New England Patriots and convicted murderer,” reads the show’s logline.
Josh Rivera stars as the controversial sports figure, who was a star tight end for the Patriots but was later convicted for murder.
In the 2013 offseason, Hernandez was arrested and charged with murdering a man who was dating his fiancee’s sister. Hernandez was found guilty of first-degree murder in 2015 and sentenced to life in prison.
He was also indicted for a 2012 double murder, but later acquitted in 2017. Days after his acquittal, he died by suicide in his jail cell and was later diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).
