TV chef dead aged 46 as tributes paid to much-loved star

My Kitchen Rules star Michael Murray died on Monday afternoon, a family remember has explained.Though no cause has yet been released, the tribute by an relative who asked not to be named read: "It's a shock to all those who know him." Michael was a contestant on the popular New Zealand cooking show and appeared alongside his cousin Piki Knap.The pair grew up together in Te Kūiti, south of Auckland and developed their love of cooking from entertaining family guests.
Michael stated his strengths were his "agility, precision and unassuming personality" that together made him a "mighty ninja in the kitchen".
During an interview earlier this year, the TV chef revealed he spent the majority of the last 12 years in Central America where he had small parts on shows including telenovelas.
Michael - who is a big fan of celebrity cook Jamie Oliver - then returned to New Zealand following the pandemic. He told Women's Day: "My background is in modelling and acting.
