Suspect named after girl, 11, stabbed in London's Leicester Square

A man has been charged in connection with the stabbing of an 11-year-old girl in Central London. Officers were called out to reports of a stabbing at Leicester Square, in Westminster, at 11.34am on Monday (August 12).

She was taken to hospital with stab wounds which were assessed as non-life threatening, the Metropolitan Police says. Ioan Pintaru was arrested by police and has since been charged.

The 32-year-old, of no fixed address, has been charged with attempted murder and possession of a bladed article. He has been remanded in custody to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court later this morning (Tuesday). A force spokesman added: "It was initially believed that the girl’s mother, a 34-year-old woman, was also hurt however it was later confirmed that blood from her daughter’s injuries had been mistaken for injuries of her own. "Media and the public are strongly reminded that this is an active case.
