Supermarket remains cheapest for basics but rivals creep closer due to price drop of one item

We've been tracking the prices of shopping essentials like bread and milk at six leading supermarkets for more than a year and a half now.

Whilst Lidl has remained the cheapest supermarket when it comes to eight staples since January this year, the most expensive has changed a number of times during that period of time.

Last week's most expensive supermarket when it came to the same items was Morrisons - which has held the unfortunate title for the last three weeks.

But last week, Asda was merely pennies away from matching Morrison's shopping basket total. And it has also appeared as the most expensive supermarket on a number of occasions in the past.
