The son of a Scots grandad who had his thumb ripped off by a devil dog has hit out at Police Scotland and prosecutors for their lack of action after the attack.
The American Bulldog, named Pablo, mauled the 72-year-old pensioner as he tried to protect his own pet dog in Blackburn, West Lothian, in July 2021.He was rushed to hospital with severe injuries to his hand - which included broken bones and the severed digit - as well as bite marks on his face and legs.
The animal’s owner, Laura McEwan, 42, appeared at Livingston Sheriff Court on Tuesday where she admitted being responsible for the dog, which was dangerously out of control. She faced an almost identical second charge after two children were injured and their pet dog killed in a separate incident involving the same dog just six months later.
But after negotiations with prosecutors, her not guilty plea was accepted as she claimed she was no longer the owner of the dog at the time of the second attack in January 2022.The pensioner’s son, David Jones, told the Record how the family warned police the beast would attack again but were initially told to report it to the local dog warden.
