Scots mum battling cancer forced to return to work in cost of living crisis

A Scots mum has told how she was forced to return to work while receiving treatment for cancer as she couldn't afford to pay her bills in the cost of living crisis.

Joanna Shaw, 51, from Dundee, began a phased return to her job in sales in October, but struggled to survive on a reduced salary before returning full-time this week as she battles to make ends meet.She has been receiving radiotherapy to treat breast cancer since she was diagnosed in January 2022 and is still undergoing intensive hormone therapy.The mum-of-two was forced to ask friends for food and went without heating after taking sick leave from work to undergo treatment.

The winter months have been especially tough, with Joanna forced to go without heating and relying on jumpers and blankets in a bid to keep warm.

She told the Record: "My fuel bill is up to £280 a month from £140-150. I've been switching the heating off and just relying on blankets and jumpers.
