Scots face summer BBQ price hikes as cost of sausages and burgers skyrocket

Scots are facing massive price rises for summer barbecues over soaring food costs for staples.The cost of a basket of favourites including sausages and hamburgers has risen by 13 per cent compared to twelve months ago.Citizens Advice Scotland social justice spokesperson David Hilferty said: “Everyone is feeling the squeeze of the cost-of-living crisis, and previous research for Citizens Advice Scotland found 9 in 10 of us are worried about food prices.

The cost of essentials continues to rise and incomes are coming close to matching them.“CAB advisers see far too many horrific examples of people having to choose between heating and eating, and warmer weather over the summer doesn’t mean that spending choices become easier.“In fact, for families with school age children it may be even more challenging without access to free school meals during the week or the childcare aspect of school."Sky high inflation is nudging downwards, but food costs remain stubbornly high.Figures collected by the House of Commons Library from Office for National Statistics (ONS) inflation reveal families wanting to enjoy a barbecue will be hit in the pocket.The average price of a packet of six bread rolls has risen from 99p in May last year to £1.06 - a 7pc rise.Boneless chicken breast (per kg) used to cost £7.22, but the price is now £8.13, a 13pc jump.The price of beef steak (per kg) has increased by 9pc from £16.58 to £18.10.Pork sausages are 20pc more expensive than they were twelve months ago.The average price of the bangers has risen from £5.54 to £6.63.A pack of four frozen beef burgers was £2.52, but is now £3.32 - a surge of 32pc.At its peak, the inflation rate for food and drink in the UK was 18.3 percent in May.John Dickie, director of
