An MSP has warned rogue fish farmers that they could face prosecution under groundbreaking plans to outlaw “ecocide” in Scotland.
A consultation is being held on new legislation which could see company bosses who cause widespread environmental damage face up to 10 years in jail.

However Labour’s Monica Lennon, who has launched the ecocide proposals at Holyrood, said: “The Scottish Government must get a grip of the shocking welfare and environmental concerns rocking Scotland’s salmon farming industry.“From allegations of zombie salmon to record fish mortality levels, 2023 has exposed worrying incidents yet SNP and Scottish Green ministers seem unwilling to investigate or hold industry giants to account.“Crimes against nature must face tougher sanctions, and that’s why my proposed ecocide law is gaining widespread support.“In 2021, legal experts agreed on a definition of ecocide as “unlawful or wanton acts committed with knowledge that there is a substantial likelihood of severe and widespread or long-term damage to the environment being caused by those acts”.
