Manchester’s latest super-tall tower has reached a major milestone this week. The Fernley building has ‘topped out’ — i.e. reached its final height — at 45 storeys.
The tower, located in the First Street area of the city centre next to Mancunian Way, is part of a development which was ‘reluctantly’ given planning permission in 2020.
That’s because its sister 45-storey skyscraper, called Acer, is a controversial ‘co-living’ development where residents share amenities usually found in individual flats — similar to halls of residence at universities — in a drive to provide 1,771 homes in the area. There will be 585 apartments in the building, some 240 studios, 237 one-bedroom apartments, 94 two-bedroom apartments and 14 ‘ultra luxury’ two-bedroom penthouse apartments.
