The Met Office has issued a major weather warning as a cold snap is set to sweep across the UK in just a few days. With temperatures plummeting, those over the age of 55 have been encouraged to stay indoors. The country is currently preparing for a sudden and harsh drop in temperatures that could leave millions freezing nationwide. This chilly spell is expected to take hold of northern regions from the morning of September 12, with temperatures predicted to plummet into single digits, reports The Express.

To help combat the cold, the Met Office has issued specific advice for older people who may find the abrupt change in weather more difficult to handle. "As we get older, our body has to work harder to keep us warm", the Met Office explains in its advice page. "From about the age of 55+, we lose around 1 per cent of our muscle mass every year.

It doesn't sound like a lot, but our muscle keeps us warm." "So it's really important to wrap up warm when you go outside. In the home, eating at least one hot meal every day and drinking regular hot drinks helps, as does getting up and moving every now and again." According to the Met Office's guidelines, homes should be kept at a minimum temperature of 18C.They also recommend staying indoors as much as possible. "When the weather is really bad, it's best to stay indoors," the advice reads. "Why not make the time to call a friend you haven't spoken to in a while, or take up a new hobby or learn a new skill.
