Manchester council has a new deputy leader after shock departure
manchestereveningnews.co.ukManchester has a new joint deputy council leader — Garry Bridges. Coun Bridges, who represents the Old Moat ward, won out in an internal Labour election to replace Luthfur Rahman.
Mr Rahman dramatically lost his Longsight seat at last week’s elections (May 2) to Shahbaz Sarwar from George Galloway’s Workers Party by 185 votes.
The result meant Labour had to find a new deputy leader to sit underneath council leader, Bev Craig, and existing deputy leader Joanna Midgley.
Four councillors put themselves forward for the job: Garry Bridges, Shazia Butt, Yasmine Dar and Basil Curley.
