Major improvements are needed to Scotland’s sewer system to reduce disgusting sewage leaks into the natural environment, a watchdog has warned.

Environmental Standards Scotland (ESS) said of the storm overflows monitored in Scotland, around a third of them spill wastewater into rivers, lochs and seas hundreds of times every year.

It’s calling on the Scottish Government to update its guidance to make it clear sewer overflows should only be used in exceptional circumstances.

So-called combined sewer overflows (CSOs) are intended to stop the sewage system from being overwhelmed during extreme weather and flooding homes and businesses.
