Two brothers ran a restaurant which was found to have cockroach and rat infestations as well as decomposing maggots. The kitchen of the Jewel Balti was found in "appalling" condition by environmental health officers and branded an "enormous risk to the public".Newport City Council received a complaint about the Indian restaurant in January 2022, with officers attending that month.
Upon arrival, former Aktar Miah asked if he could refuse them entry to his eatery, Wales Online reports.Cardiff Crown Court heard yesterday that Miah, 37, told officers that the "kitchen needed to be cleaned" but the restaurant was in a much worse state than the comment suggested.Tom Roberts, prosecuting, said that there was a build-up of grime and filth across the kitchen and an area on the floor covered in a white mass of debris and fluid.
This turned out to be decomposing maggots and live cockroaches. There were enough cockroach droppings to confirm that there was an active infestation.
One officer saw a rat hiding in a hole in a corridor, and the rodent could be heard running behind the walls.Raw meat was stored in dirty containers, with some of it uncovered and some kept outside.
