A butcher has explained the reason why turkeys often turn rotten before Christmas Day after reports of some families left with a rancid bird.

It wouldn't be Christmas without a culinary disaster or two, but nobody wants to start preparing their turkey only to find it's rotting inside.

Unfortunately, this nightmare became a reality for many people yesterday as they took to social media to complain about the state of their festive birds.Turkeys reportedly purchased from the likes of Aldi, Tesco and Asda were described as 'slimy', 'rancid' and 'unsafe for human consumption' despite being within their use-by dates.

Because of this, many people declared their Christmas had been 'ruined'.And according to a family-run butcher, this tends to happen more when it comes to supermarket turkeys as it can sometimes be a month before Christmas that they're slaughtered, the Mirror reports.
