Christmas Day horror crash as driver falls asleep at wheel after 12-hour shift

A driver crashed their car driving home from work on Christmas Day after dozing off at the wheel following a 12-hour shift.

But a Christmas miracle saw them walking away from the wreckage unscathed. Shocking pictures of the trashed vehicle were shared by police following the incident, which saw the driver rushed to hospital.

Officers said the driver was lucky not to be seriously injured and had crashed while tired, after working all night. One lane was shut following the 6am incident, so the mangled car could be removed from the scene, and the road was clear by 10am.

The crash took place on the M60 motorway, near Ashton-under-Lyne, The Mirror reports. The North West Motorway Police shared: "This is the aftermath of an RTC at 6AM this morning on the M60 near junction 23, driver just finished a 12 hour shift and fell asleep at the wheel, thankfully not serious injuries but likely to remain in hospital today."Please take a break if feeling tired." One shocked person called it a "Christmas miracle" the person survived, while another replied: "My wife used to work 12hr shifts in A&E and Major Trauma, always used to worry about her driving home in the morning. "Employers really need to be more mindful of how their staff get home post shift." Another added: "That looks horrendous, good news wasn't more serious hope they're ok.
