Lewis Hamilton is standing with his LGBTQ+ fans. Just days ahead of the F1 Miami Grand Prix, the 38-year-old Formula One driver spoke out about the state’s recently implemented laws. Keep reading to find out more… Speaking with the Associated Press during a press conference for the race weekend, Lewis said that “it’s not good at all.” “I stand by those within the community here.

I hope they continue to stand firm and push back. I’ll have the rainbow on my helmet. It’s no different to when we were in Saudi [Arabia],” he added.

At the end of March, Republican Governor Ron DeSantis approved the Parental Rights in Education bill as a state law, which has been extended to disallow public school educators from instructing students on topics related to gender identity or sexual orientation. Lewis then added that even though he opposes the bill, that would not stop him from racing in the state. “It’s not for me to decide something like that,” he noted, as it would be F1′s decision about the future of the circuits. “I did hear and have read about some of the decisions that have been made in government here and I do not agree with it and I do not support it.” Lewis added, “I really do continue to stand with the LGBTQ community and I’m wearing a rainbow flag on my helmet this weekend and I just really want to continue to support the community here and let them know I stand with them and I hope they continue to fight against it.” The Miami Grand Prix main race will take place on Sunday, May 7.
