People in Scotland and across the rest of the UK are being asked to leave bowls of water outside in the coming days, in order to protect native wildlife.The urgent appeal has been shared on Reddit by eco-conscious forum users after a recent heatwave sent temperatures soaring, reaching a scorching 31.2C in the south of England on Friday.It’s won't be quite so hot in Scotland over the next two days, but temperatures are set to reach the mid-twenties.

This warm spell could leave birds and small mammals struggling to find enough to drink, as puddles dry up and the ground hardens.The RSPB have even reported sightings of birds “panting” in hot weather, saying: “Birds can’t sweat so, like dogs, some pant instead.

By opening their beaks and breathing heavily, air rushes in causing the moisture in their lungs, throat and mouths to evaporate.” They advise putting out bowls of water for birds in hot weather, so they can take a dip and also have a drink.As reports the Express, Reddit users shared similar advice, with one (Emehen) writing: "If you have a garden, try to leave a bowl of water out.

Wildlife suffers from this heat as much as we do."Another, named Byjmini, added: "Went and put some large saucers out after work yesterday once I saw this post.
