The Great British Bake Off house has been invaded by slugs! The unwelcome creatures have ruined the snowdrops at Welford Park in Newbury, Berkshire.
This famous country estate has been a filming location for the popular show for the last decade. The park, known for its "magnificent" carpet of snowdrops that usually bloom throughout February, released an announcement to potential visitors titled "Where have all the flowers gone?
Unfortunately, the heavy rain and warm air this month have caused a slug outbreak, which has wiped out the snowdrop population on the grounds. "February 2024 has been one of the wettest months on record, certainly since we opened in 1998," said the team at Welford Park on their Facebook page. "Last year the snowdrops were magnificent and white for 5 weeks, lasting right through to March." But now, due to the high rainfall and warm temperatures, there's been a surge in slugs who've eaten their way through the carpet of flowers in the beech wood.
Welford Park was the home of the Great British Bake Off from 2014 to 2019, and then again from 2022 after a brief move during the COVID lockdowns.
