A play written by a former Castle Douglas High School student is being staged at the Edinburgh Fringe. Alexander Young’s debut theatre show will run at the world’s biggest arts festival from August 20-27.

Goodbye Postie! And Farewell to All Your Troubles! was inspired by difficult choices facing young people in the rural south-west.

Alexander told the News: “I had a mate the same age as me in Castle Douglas who was a postman. “Now he’s got a couple of kids. “Folk with big ambitions in that situation are sometimes kind of locked in and that’s why an awfy amount of young folk move away – to escape. “So it’s interesting to see why some folk choose to go and others choose to stay. “I thought that would be something quite interesting to explore – especially with young folk in mind.” Alexander, 23, who goes under his mother’s maiden name, Artis, studied acting at college in Glasgow for two years and was in Fife during Covid before moving to Edinburgh.

He caught the theatre bug at the high school years earlier – after a member of staff suggested he try the stage. Alexander said: “I used to play the saxophone and guitar at Castle Douglas High School. “But they took away free tuition and you were paying through the nose to keep it up.
