John Hopewell Chief International Correspondent Films Boutique will handle international sales on Filipino master Lav Díaz’s “Essential Truths of The Lake,” one of the highest-profile titles in the just announced main International Competition at this year’s Locarno Festival.  The Berlin and Lyon-based production-sales company’s fifth collaboration with Diaz following, among others, Venice Golden Bear Winner “The Woman Who Left” and Berlin Silver Bear Winner “Lullaby To A Sorrowful Mystery,” “Essential Truths of The Lake” marks a prequel to Diaz’s ‘When The Waves Are Gone’ that premiered out of competition at Venice last year. It reprises the character of the ethically conflicted police lieutenant Hermes Papauran, one of the best investigators of the Philippines. When asked what drives a man to search for the truth, Papauran says dejectedly that maybe he just wants to keep inflicting pain on himself. 

K.J. Yossman Soccer star Kalvin Phillips is the subject of a new doc on Amazon Prime Video. Phillips, one of Manchester City’s top players, will tells his story in “Kalvin Phillips: The Road to City.” From his early days at Leeds Academy to Man City’s historic triple win (taking the Premier League, FA Cup, UEFA Champions League), “The Road to City” will chart Phillips’ meteoric rise. “The documentary paints an intimate portrait of a footballer with deep roots and family values as it follows his journey to Manchester City and the dramatic injury ahead of the biggest tournament in football, the 2022 FIFA World Cup,” reads the logline.

MF DOOM’s cause of death has been revealed, nearly three years after he passed away.The British-born rapper — whose real name is Daniel Dumile — died on October 31, 2020, aged 49. However, his cause of death had never been disclosed.Now, his wife Jasmine Dumile has confirmed that her partner passed away from a condition known as angioedema — a rare and severe reaction he had to his blood pressure medication.An inquiry into his death shed new details on the circumstances that led to his passing, and Jasmine explained that the musician suffered from a number of health conditions including high blood pressure and kidney disease.As per the inquiry (reported via LeedsLive), MF DOOM was prescribed angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE) inhibitors to treat his high blood pressure, but after two doses he developed a severe reaction.

LOONA members Yeojin, Gowon and Olivia Hye have reportedly signed with the new K-pop agency CTDENM.On July 5, South Korean news agency ETNews reported that LOONA’s Yeojin, Gowon and Olivia Hye have signed exclusive contracts with CTDENM, citing industry insiders. Kevin Spacey’s alleged victims has claimed the actor was “giggling” after he committed sexual assault.At Southwark Crown Court in London on Monday (July 3), a pre-recorded police interview of the unidentified man’s allegations was aired to the jury. Ahmed, who earned an Oscar nomination for best actor in 2021 for his performance as a drummer who suddenly goes deaf in Amazon’s “Sound of Metal,” will be feted by the Swiss fest dedicated to indie filmmaking cinema with with its 2021 Excellence Award Davide Campari, which pays tribute to film personalities who have left their personal stamp on contemporary cinema. “Dammi,” which was teased at Cannes, is an experimental work, broadly on the theme of immigration and identity, produced by French fashion brand  AMI, founded by Alexandre Mattiussi, and also starring Isabelle Adjani, Souheila Yacoub, Sandor Funtek and Suzy Bemba. The buzzed-about short will screen at Locarno’s 8,000-seat Piazza Grande, on opening night, Aug. 2, during the ceremony at which Amed will receive the award.

Locarno’s 2023 lineup was announced July 5. ‘Family Portrait’ The first feature from Kerr, a Texas-born filmmaker, video and installation artist and curator, “Family Portrait” turns on a sprawling Texas family that gets together on a morning to take a group picture. 

Marta Balaga Switzerland’s Locarno Film Festival, Europe’s biggest mid-Summer movie event, has announced its lineup, welcoming recognizable names to its main competition, from Filipino auteur Lav Diaz (“Essential Truths of the Lake”) to Romanian powerhouse Radu Jude, who will show “Do Not Expect Too Much of the End of the World.” As already announced, Cate Blanchett and Zar Amir Ebrahimi are set to attend the Locarno Film Festival’s closing night to promote the European launch of Iranian-Australian director Noora Niasari’s debut film “Shayda.” Among the titles selected for Locarno’s more broad-audience-friendly Piazza Grande lineup, Justine Triet will attend with her Cannes Palme’ d’Or winner “Anatomy of a Fall,” along with Ken Loach and his “The Old Oak.”

John Hopewell Chief International Correspondent New Europe Film Sales is set to launch international sales on “Stepne,”the debut feature of Ukraine’s Maryna Vroda, a best short Cannes Palme d’Or winner, which was announced this July 5 morning as part of Locarno’s main International Competition.  Born in Kyiv, Vroda won a Palme d’Or in 2011 for her short “Cross Country” (“Kross”), a seemingly allegorical psychological drama about a boy who is forced to run, then does so willingly, ending up watching his classmates running a senseless cross-country race as a boy rolls in a transparent ball in a river. “Kross” was inspired by Vroda’s memories of physical education lessons. “Stepne” is equally personal, coming to Vroda when her grandparents died. In it, a middle-aged man travels to his family home to care for his dying mother. He meets his brother and a woman he loves and thinks back to his life choices such as leaving to live in a big city. Then, just before dying, her mother tells her about a treasure she’s buried in the shed.

The project, which will also include an accompanying novel, has already been made into a short film of the same name under Cole-Bulgin’s banner Tickled Pink, a new gen-IP development company. “Land Mine” is set in Poland in the late summer of 1945. Based on historical records and witness testimonies, it tells the story of a young Jewish man, Samuel, who emerges from Bergen-Belsen concentration camp as his family’s sole survivor. Returning to his family’s Polish farm, 22-year-old Samuel finds it has been occupied by a local laborer called Piotr who is using it to run a moonshine business.
