The 'dignified' husband of an elderly woman who was killed after being struck down on a pedestrian crossing told the driver who hit her 'I forgive you' as she was spared jail.

Grandmother Patricia Dermody, 75, was crossing Wellington Road in Ashton-under-Lyne when she was hit by a Mercedes CLK-class.

The driver was 58-year-old Julie Parkin, who had pulled off from a set of traffic lights and struck Mrs Dermody as she was still walking across the road.

Tameside Magistrates' Court heard how Parkin had her two grandchildren in the car at the time and was on her way to treat them to a McDonald's.
