When Hugo Stafford started suffering from fatigue and a high temperature, doctors thought he might have had a viral infection.
His mum Breeze Rowan took him to hospital where tests revealed his blood count was critically low, increasing his risk of catching infections.
The three-year-old, from Middleton, was transferred to Manchester Royal Children’s Hospital and treated with antibiotics. Testing was carried out on his bone marrow but medics were unable to figure out what was making him so unwell.
Once the tot’s temperature stabilised, he was allowed to go home but made to return for weekly blood tests. Over time, Hugo’s blood count managed to double and his condition improved.
