Coronation Street's Daniel star Rob Mallard teases surprise baby twist

Soap fans love a new baby on the scene and in soapland they know the path to parenthood never runs smoothly without a shock birth, surprising secret parents or involving a character from the past.

It seems things might not be too dissimilar on the cobbles as Coronation Street actor Rob Mallard, who plays Daniel Barlow, hints at an exciting baby storyline for his character on the horizon in a surprise twist.The doting on-screen dad is already a father to his son Bertie who he shared with his late wife Sinead Tinker but he has hinted at "expanding his brood" as he looks set to step into his father, Ken Barlow's, shoes.

Speaking at the Mummy's Star Ball to the Daily Star, he said: "Eventually one day I think he will be [a dad]. I think he just needs to expand his brood, I'd love that. “I think he needs to climb up the tree in the family and take on more responsibility and be the new Ken Barlow.” The actor hopes that his teacher character will eventually take over the Corrie stalwart in the near future, admitting that he's a "mini Ken with a chip on his shoulder" and that Daniel always feels that he has to do something meaningful. "Being in the STC (Secure Training Centre) to give kids another chance when they leave, I think he sees it as a noble profession." Weatherfield fans have been on the edges of their seats over the past few weeks as Daisy Midgeley, played by Charlotte Jordan, and Ryan Connor, played by Ryan Prescott, continue to grow closer following the aftermath of the horrendous acid attack on Justin Rutherford last month.
