A collector who sold a rare 50p coin for just under £200 has told people to “check their change” as they could have some valuable pieces lying around.
Three years ago Darren James bought a 2009 Kew Gardens 50p coin off eBay for £80. The 38-year-old decided to sell the coin on the auction website but he had no idea how much he would get, or if he would even break even.
At first there wasn’t much interest in the coin, which Darren said was a “slow-burner”. Then in the final hour of the bidding things started heating up and the price soared to £186.11.
