Bras recycled in Ayrshire town as ladies do their bit for the environment

Women in Prestwick are tearing their bras off... to help lower carbon emissions.Up to 200 of the ladies’ undergarments have been donated so far to a recycling group who aim to reduce old items going into landfill.Along with the 200 bras, a staggering 340 pairs of glasses have been donated.The group behind the venture is Recycling Saturday - Prestwick, an organisation that already boasts more than 500 members on Facebook.Member Carolyn O’Hara said: “I have been involved with the Prestwick group, the first to be established, almost two years, and which has since inspired groups in Troon and Ayr.“We’re a passionate bunch, and are keen to involve people in these towns who do not have an online presence.“And it’s all about keeping stuff out of landfill, and helping others- in the hope of encouraging more participation.“Recently, as a group, we collected nearly 200 bras in one day, and 340 pairs of glasses!”In terms of the bras, they go into a chain which benefits so many.They're dropped off at the breast screening department at Ayrshire Central Hospital, who send them to Against Breast Cancer.They, in turn, sell them to a fabric recycler to raise money for research into breast cancer.

Then a fabric recycler takes them to Africa, where any that are in decent condition are distributed to be worn. Those that are less good, are taken apart by one woman businesses, and the fabric, lace decoration etc is made into new bras.

This sort of fabric is very expensive in Africa and hard to come by.Finally, the metal wires go to be recycled.Carolyn revealed: "The 200 collected in February have already been passed on, but we hope there will be more donated on March 4th."Carolyn revealed the inspirational figure behind the group.She said:
