The BBC has acknowledged that a line of questioning to Andrew Scott over the notorious nudity scene in Saltburn was “misjudged.” The broadcaster said today it had received complaints from people who felt a question asked to the All of Us Strangers star – who does not appear in Saltburn – was “inappropriate and homophobic” during Sunday’s BAFTA red carpet coverage.
In the scene, Saltburn lead Barry Keoghan is seen dancing naked at the end of the movie. “Our question to Andrew Scott was meant to be a light hearted reflection of the discussion around the scene and was not intended to cause offence,” said the BBC, adding that Saltburn writer and director, Emerald Fennell, and Sophie Ellis-Bextor, whose song ‘Murder on the Dancefloor’ was used in the sequence, were also asked about it. “We do, however, accept that the specific question asked to Andrew Scott was misjudged,” the BBC went on today. “After speaking with Andrew on the carpet, our reporter acknowledged on air that his questioning may have gone too far and that he was sorry if this was the case.” BBC reporter Colin Paterson had asked Scott, who is gay, about his reaction to the scene, and Scott replied: “I won’t spoil it for anyone.
It’s great, it’s great.” Paterson then invited Scott to “spoil away” and asked: “There is a lot of talk about prosthetics. How well do you know [Keoghan]?” Scott waved away the question and motioned to move down the red carpet.
The clip has been viewed millions of times on X and drew an immediate negative reaction. All of Us Strangers was nominated for six BAFTAs and Saltburn five.
