'We were messaging our friend asking to meet up - not knowing he'd been tragically killed'

Friends of a tragic university student have spoken of the devastating moment they messaged him hoping to meet up over the summer break, not knowing he had been killed.

Liam O’Connor was struck by a silver Peugeot 308 on Great North Road in Jesmond, Newcastle, just after 1.40am on June 10. The 20-year-old pedestrian suffered life-threatening injuries after colliding with the vehicle, which was reportedly travelling northbound.

He was rushed to hospital where he died. The friends of the Newcastle University student, originally from Manchester, described him as a 'special' person who was 'funny' and 'hardworking'. He had just finished the second year of his course and was living in Jesmond, a neighbourhood just outside Newcastle city centre popular with students, reports the Chronicle.
