When it comes to buying a property, house hunters have to choose whether they'd prefer a new-build or an old house. Whilst there are pros and cons to both, many people who opt for a period property do so because of their original features, charm and character.

Married couple Becky and Chris Quirk had just finished renovating their new-build home and thought they were settled, but Becky had always dreamed of buying an older house.

It was only when a 150-year-old Victorian property came up for sale on Manchester Road - a street she had always admired - that the couple took the plunge and made an offer.

The pair bought the five-bed semi-detached house in Swinton, Salford in October 2022 for £495,000 and, since then, they have been renovating it bit by bit to turn it into their forever home - and uncovered a secret room in the process.
