Tragedy of girl, 15, who died after going for paddle in river with friends

A popular schoolgirl who went into a river to 'have a paddle' and to 'cool off' on a hot summer's day drowned after she 'lost her balance' and went under the water.

Abbie Walton, 15, also known as also known as Habiba Sharafeldin, from Hattersley, Tameside, went to a stretch of the River Etherow in nearby Broadbottom with friends on June 14 this year.

However, Abbie and two other children who were with her got into difficulties when the water 'unexpectedly' became too deep for them, an inquest has heard. The emergency services were scrambled with a large search operation which included a fire service boat, a drone and underwater cameras.
