But Irish legend Sinead O'Connor's signature buzzcut was arguably the most iconic of them all.The Grammy-winning singer, who was propelled to international stardom in 1990 with her version of the hit ballad Nothing Compares 2 U, has died aged 56, a statement from her family on Wednesday said.
It comes just 18 months after her beloved son took his own life after going missing from hospital whilst on suicide watch. But during her life, the singer was renowned for her incredible voice, and instantly recognisable thanks to her trademark hair style.The star first shaved her head at the age of 20 as her way of projecting a more androgynous look, as music producers wanted her to look feminine, but she later divulged there were some dark reasons behind her hairstyle.
In an emotional interview with TV psychologist Dr Phil, she revealed that she remained bald because she didn’t want to be viewed as "pretty".
