Ten Hag's future hung in the balance towards the end of last season as Ratcliffe and the new-look United hierarchy assessed whether he'd been leading the team next season.
Even after the FA Cup triumph, it wasn't clear if he'd be staying or going. Several alternatives were sounded out, including former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, before it was ultimately decided they were best off sticking by their current coach.
The unusual process certainly raised eyebrows.
